Beckham Alexander Reed

Here is my story of how our second precious boy came into our world.

My due date was Saturday, June 18th. In the month of May, I was tired and stressed from working through the last month of school. I am somewhat of a perfectionist and control-freak when it comes to my classroom so I wanted to be there for the last month but the possibility of me having the baby early led me to prepare everything for that last month way in advance. It was nice to have almost everything ready, but I think I put too much pressure on myself; not to mention that the last month of school is crazy busy - field day, field trip, report cards, awards day, several celebrations, end of year assessments, my final evaluation, cleaning my room, etc. I was wiped out.

However, the first two weeks of summer vacation were so perfect. Parker and I had so much fun going to the pool almost every day, playing at the park, having picnics, playing at home, eating ice cream, and just relaxing. I felt like a new person! I was definitely ready to have the baby but didn't feel stressed about it.

The week before I was due, I was starting to get a lot more uncomfortable. I hate not being able to get around easily or not having a lot of energy. So, needless to say, I wanted to have the baby soon. At my appointment 2 days before my due date, I was dilated to 2 cm. Before she checked me, she asked if I wanted her to try to move things along. Like, break my water or something. I said no, because even though I wanted to have the baby, I really wanted him to come when he was ready. Well, when she checked my cervix, she checked pretty hard! I think she actually stripped my membranes (which is just separating your water from your uterus). It was pretty uncomfortable/painful but quick. The rest of that night I had cramps but it made me hopeful that baby B would be here soon.

Friday the 17th started out normal. Then by dinner time I was starting to have contractions. They weren't very strong and they were about 15 minutes apart. So I went on with our night like normal. They got a little stronger as the evening went on. My sister, Clint, and I watched a movie to pass some time. They continued although the time of them never really got too close. Clint decided to go to bed to get some sleep in case we had to go in sometime during the night. Well, about midnight the contractions stopped completely. So I went to bed. I woke up 2-3 times with a few more contractions. I was back to feeling crampy or just uncomfortable.

Saturday - due date - and as the morning went on I kept hoping for some contractions because I thought it would be great to have another baby on their due date. My sister and I went to Metropolis to do a bunch of walking. I had a handful of contractions but mostly I was uncomfortable. Then we went to have Mexican for lunch and by then, I was wore out and felt terrible. That evening we watched another movie and I had contractions but they were off and on and nothing noteworthy. I had several that night that were pretty strong but again, nothing in succession.

Sunday. Now I was past my due date! It was also Father's Day. Two reasons to have a baby! I was feeling fine for the beginning of the morning. Then at about 10 am contractions started up. They were about 10 minutes apart and were strong enough to make me somewhat uncomfortable. Lindsay and my dad took Parker to the park while Clint and I relaxed at home. We went for a walk around the neighborhood to try to keep the contractions going. I also like to stand or walk when in labor so this was helpful. Once Parker got home, Lindsay kept him busy playing and then put him down for his nap. All the while my contractions were slowly getting stronger, but no closer together. By late afternoon, I was having really intense contractions but they were sometimes 5 minutes apart, sometimes 13 minutes apart. With Parker, I had very quick/rapid contractions without much time in between. They were never so painful that I cried (which I would score about an 8 or 9 on a scale to 10). However, this time they were much more intense - definitely an 8 or 9 but there was much more time in between. I was somewhat frustrated because I was in some pain but I knew you needed them close together to go in to the hospital. With Parker I started contractions at 6 am and had him at 5:58 pm - so about 12 hours of labor. This time, I started at 10 am and as time wore on, Clint was getting nervous that I would wait too long to go in. So about 4:30 we called. The on call doctor said she would like to see them closer together but if I wanted to go in, that was a good call too. We waited another hour or so and then I was ready. I didn't want to cause too much confusion for Parker and I knew I could focus a little more away from home.

We got to the hospital about 6pm. On the way there, I only had a few contractions and once we were there and I got changed, I only had a few more contractions. I was a little upset that it seemed things were slowing down. They had me in a bed while they checked things out so I was a little impatient to get up to maybe get things started again. I was partly worried they were going to send me back home. The nurse checked my cervix and I was now 4.5 cm. The doctor said I was staying! Once we were admitted and all hooked up, I got out of bed. My contractions started up again and were all over the place. Some were extremely painful and long and others were short and manageable. I measured 6 cm at about 9 pm. My nurse asked about wanting an epidural and I didn't think I wanted one yet because I didn't want to get stuck in a bed and/or slow my labor down. Well about 9:30 I started rethinking my decision because contractions were very hard at this point! So about 5 minutes later, after realizing that it would take a while for the anesthesiologist to get to my room and get it all set up, I told the nurse I was ready for it.

The anesthesiologist showed up a little after 10 pm...like I expected! He got everything set up and taped up my entire back it felt like! At least it wasn't moving! Earlier in the evening I had mentioned that I had to be put on oxygen from low blood pressure and Parker's low heart rate after getting an epidural with Parker. My nurse told me that you had to have one bag of fluid in you in order to get an epidural, and since I had told her that, she made sure I had 3 bags. Right before the anesthesiologist showed up, she pushed the third bag through me kind of quickly, which in turn made me freezing! That then sent me into a fit of shivers! So once the epidural was ready to be started I was shivering like crazy! The nurse helped hold me still but the epidural was pretty painful this time. Last time, it wasn't too bad but like many other things, this was much more intense. After the anesthesiologist was finished, I settled into my bed hoping to get a little rest because I was completely wore out. My nurse said I was now 8 cm.

The nurse turned out our lights and said to get some rest. I was a little wired at this point for some reason and I could still feel when I was contracting. It wasn't painful - it just felt like when you get the wind knocked out of you, minus me losing my breath. Very strange feeling. Well, not long after leaving, the nurse came back in and started checking my blood pressure. She had a very serious look on her face which made Clint and I start to wonder. I had an idea of what was happening so I asked her if my BP dropped and she said yep and then called the nurses in. 4 nurses came in and they started doing several things to bring my blood pressure and Beckham's heart rate up. My blood pressure first dropped to 98/50 something. I'm not sure what Beckham's heart rate was at that time. They rolled me on my side which is supposed to help the baby and they gave me oxygen and ephedrine. Neither of us responded too quickly but eventually they got us both to a good spot. Around this time I started feeling a lot of pressure. I had a feeling things were coming to a head  (hehe). I told my nurse that I had the feeling that I had to go to the bathroom which I knew meant that I felt the need to push! I didn't have this feeling with Parker because my epidural really blocked most feelings out. This time, the pain was there and it wasn't going away! The nurse said to hold on and she went to get the doctor. The doctor showed up and said to get this party started (or something along those lines). I pushed through 4 separate contractions, with 2 or 3 pushes each time and that 4th time, out he came! Later the nurse told me that it took 9 minutes of pushing to get him here. Of course it felt like longer but I'm glad that's all it took because the pain was no joke!

The nurses put him right on my chest and Clint snipped the cord and that was that! Our precious baby Beckham was here and we were in love!

Beckham was born Monday, June 20th at 12:59 am. He was 7 pounds 6 ounces and measured 20.5 inches long.

Maternity Pictures

Last weekend, a family friend offered to take some family pictures for us because she is trying photography out so I said sure!

We took pictures at 9 am but it was already pretty hot! It was definitely hard to have a good hair day with the humidity and sweaty neck. I also wasn't too fond of my outfit afterwards...of course the vision in your head is always better than reality! I did sew my dress the night before and I wish I would I have made it more shapely in the waist. Parker was really good and didn't get too squirrely.

Last night Parker stayed the night at Jennifer's so this morning I thought I'd go to the Avon Town Hall park and take a few more pictures. The weather was a lot cooler and I brought my tripod and remote and found a really cool field. Then I went over to the barn that is by the ultimate frisbee course.

I've been wanting to improve my editing skills so I tried a few things for these pictures and I really like how they turned out! The one thing that was hard to do was getting myself where I wanted in the frame but that's ok.

I only got one bug bite too! I was hoping taking some pictures and wanting to get them uploaded and edited would jinx me and send me into labor, but alas. Here I am 4 days away from my due date. Guess we'll keep waiting!

38 (and a half) Weeks

I am a little over 38 weeks now...officially due next Saturday! However I know that he may or may not be here before then or even after. And we will not discuss how I feel about him not being here before then. I have felt like he would come a little early but those days are ticking away! I was really nervous to make it to the end of the school year, especially in the last two weeks of school because I was so busy and active. But alas, here we are!

Last Thursday was my last day with my students and then Friday was the last official day of school. I got my room all cleaned up and packed up a small amount of things to being home with me for my year off. It is still so weird to think that I will not be going back to school in the fall. I know that once school starts up again I will be so glad I am taking the year off but it just feels weird. I know it will also probably fly by so I am prepared to enjoy it while it lasts! Parker is at such a fun age that I know we will love being home together!

I feel like Baby B has dropped and there have definitely been plenty of contractions, but nothing consistent. Last Friday I had a doctor's appointment and I am still just dilated to 1 cm. I am scheduled to go in again on Thursday so we shall see then!

With school being out I have rested up plenty this past weekend and so far this week so I don't really have any complaints about being pregnant other than not feeling like I have anymore room to give! I will be so glad to be able to sit cross-legged on the floor, run around or use stairs without being winded, pull the wagon, etc. after this baby gets here.  Being 9 months pregnant is for the birds! :)

Parker tried to help push him out this afternoon and then said "nope. He says he's not ready. Few more days mommy." I sure hope only a few more!

And of course, just for fun! Here is this time vs. past time. Clearly I am a side part kind of girl with my hair!

Maybe my next post will be to introduce our new baby ;)

37 Weeks

Baby B has officially made it to full term at 37 weeks! However, with three days of school next week, I hope he decides to stay in there for just a bit longer...but not too long!

I am still moving really well and have lots of energy for most of the day but I pretty much crash out at the end of the day because I stink at pacing myself.

Everything is looking really good so far. Today I went to the doctor and I am 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced. I've had sporadic contractions lately, but like I said...I want him to wait just a bit longer. Also, my doctor is out of town this weekend! I've gained 30 pounds so far and kind of hope to stay here for the next couple weeks but either way I'll live. I'm measuring at 36 weeks which is good too. My blood pressure is 110/58 which is how it has pretty much been the entire time. My cankles...I mean ankles, have swelled a bit and because I've been pretty active this week (with a field trip, line dancing, chasing a toddler, teaching in a two story building, etc.) they haven't gone down much. So I may prop my feet up some this weekend. We'll see anyways. I have a mini to do list for the weekend: the neighborhood pool opens up Saturday and Parker is overly excited!! So we will definitely head there some this weekend. I am hoping to go into my classroom for just a short bit to clean out some things that I don't want to leave there while on maternity leave for the next year. Then of course, just general having fun family time :) I wrote this before going to the doctor and now that I know I have progressed a bit, I may have to hold on some of my plans for the weekend!

Not too much of a difference again other than my chubby face :)

35 Weeks!

Saturday marked 35 weeks for this mama! I have officially started rounding down when people ask how much longer. So today I am technically 4 weeks and 6 days away from my due date but I just say 4 weeks. It just makes me feel like I am getting closer!

I am wearing the shirt that Clint got me for Mother's Day! It's a little snug right now ;)

I went for a doctor's appointment last week and I am currently not dilated...which is good news since I don't want to have this baby too early. Now once school is out...I'll be ready!

Last week I took half days on Tuesday and Thursday and will also this week and next week. Two weeks ago I started really get tired and too grumpy or emotional for me or Clint ;) to handle. So I decided to use my personal days to make sure I am not overdoing it. Since that is something I tend to do. Last week was a lot better at school and home since I didn't feel tired or stressed. My students obviously don't like when I leave early but if only they realized how much more I got done because I knew going in on Monday that I had a little time off! My needy behavior kids had much better weeks because I didn't feel so impatient with them and I felt more energized to teach better even though we are headed into the final two weeks (plus three days)!

My ankles have mostly stayed the same size other than a smidge of slight swelling a couple days but those were obviously days I was more active.

We got the boys' new beds delivered on Tuesday and Clint got them all put together! I am not 100% sure how I want them situated but I'm sure after having Clint move them 2-3 times, I'll figure it out :)

I did a bit more shopping the other day at Buy Buy Baby. I got a couple newborn pod swaddles:

and another regular swaddle:
some navy star crib sheets:

and a few other small things.

I meant to share these ultrasound pics a few weeks ago but oh well.

These are from my 31 week ultrasound:

She was supposed to save a video but I guess she forgot. Oh well again.

and because I like to do comparisons, Parker is on the left and new baby on the right! I think I see a similar nose ;)

Here is the comparison of my belly:

not too much difference other than my glasses and different hair style - sorta, and my face was a little more full last time.

Here's to the last month and a few good men...I mean memes.

:)

33 Weeks

Last Saturday marked 33 weeks along in this second pregnancy. I am getting close to the end but some days I wish were already the end ;)

Since my updates haven't been as frequent, I'd thought I do a little rundown similar to my first pregnancy!

Sleep: Other than when we get to bed late or Coco Puff barks her face off, I have been getting really good sleep! I don't have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night most nights so it's nice getting as much sleep as I can. Some nights, well, most the baby won't stop moving so it takes a bit to fall asleep.

Body Changes: I have gained about 25 pounds which is about similar to last time. My ideal goal was to be between 30-35 total, so I think I'm doing fine. I also don't seem to mind as much this time...maybe because I know I can get in a good exercise routine after the baby comes and I'll be off all next year to give me time to get back to where I want. Also, weight gain isn't the end of the world when I am more worried about being tired ;)

Food: I haven't had any food aversions or cravings this whole time, which is similar to last time. I still have to watch portion size because I will pay for it otherwise!

Symptoms: Is being winded a symptom? Stairs are killer these days and like last time I am cursing my school for being two floors and the fact that I am downstairs is just cruel. Also, I am normally a very quick walker and being pregnant is not a natural reminder for me to slow down, so once I start huffing and puffing I realize I should just walk slower. I haven't started getting swollen yet so that is a good thing.  When I had my 20 week ultrasound I noticed that my stomach was sensitive on both sides of my belly button and the ultrasound was a little uncomfortable. When I had my 30 week ultrasound, let's just it was quite painful! My doctor wasn't sure if it was the ligaments or just the stretched muscles but I am kind of glad I don't need another ultrasound.

I think I have also started having some Braxton Hicks type contractions. I never had any last time but I never had anything that could have been them. This time, in the last week, I have had quite a few small but definitely noticeable contractions. Guess we'll see if they turn into anything real!

Movement: This baby has been twice as active as Parker was when I was pregnant with him. I am really not joking when I say that he moves nearly all hours of the day. The last week or so has brought on the more serious kicks and jabs. My ribs and left side have turned into a serious punching bag as well as the front right by my belly button.

Things We've Bought or Did: Since spring break we have been super busy! The library is coming along and I would like to do an update on it soon. It is used every day and we love that is a family space. I washed and put away all the newborn and 0-3 month clothes we saved and have purchased or received. So the dresser is full and ready to go! I went through Parker's current clothes and packed up his long sleeve shirts and his too short 2T pants. With Indiana spring, I kept some pants since the weather changes frequently. I also packed up some smaller 2T jammies and shirts. Now he has lots of room for all his 3T clothes. Speaking of those, I went to the consignment sale in Danville a couple weeks ago and hit the jackpot! Some times, those sales are hit and miss but I really got some good deals and nice clothes. I spent about $180 and got 80 items. I think 75 were clothing pieces so I spent about $2 an item and pretty much have his entire summer wardrobe ready. Plus he received several new outfits for his birthday. We are set for a while!

We decided to order a bed and crib because a stained set would be too dark. So we bought a white crib:

and blue bunk beds:

I am so excited about the bunk beds but can't believe we will have to hold on to the top one for two years or so! I can't wait for them to get here later this week :)

With the weather being so nice this weekend, we did a little yard maintenance and work. We've had a couple fire pit bowls since being married but those things just never last. So we used this image I found on Pinterest:

along with the tutorial for the fire pit. We already had a few large cinder blocks from taking out the pool, so we made the bench too. We enjoyed a fire Sunday evening and roasted hot dogs, which Parker was so excited about! I foresee lots of evenings outside this summer!

Well that about sums up our life right now! I go back to the doctor next week where I get checked to see if I have dilated or anything. Scary to believe that the end is really near...well the end of this pregnancy ;)

30 Weeks

Yesterday officially marked 30 weeks! Next week we will be down to double digits! Yikes!

Of course Parker likes to be a part of any picture I take but he makes it much cuter :)

This Friday we have our next ultrasound so we are definitely excited about that! Everything has been going really well and also really fast! I can't believe I am already to week 30!

We have been super busy around the house the last few weeks trying to get lots of small projects/unfinished business completed so that we won't have anything to worry about once the new babe gets here.

The boys' room is pretty much done. I may add a few more decorative touches but overall it's good! I was able to get a few coats of a clear coat on the dresser to keep it protected so I have started filling the drawers. I have been buying diapers and wipes the last couple months to try to get a small stash ready so I am glad I have some place to put those things.

I got out all of Parker's old newborn clothes from the basement and need to get those washed soon and then out away. It seems like not that long ago that he was wearing all those clothes! How can he be turning three this weekend?!

Now that we are almost to May, I better get hospital bags packed and ready soon! Last time I kept telling Clint to do it but he didn't listen! So when we went to the hospital, I threw some clothes in a bag only for him to find a too-small shirt ;) He says he learned his lesson, but I'll let you know when he gets his bag packed ;)

The other day at school I thought my belly was looking very basketball-like so I snapped a quick pic. I definitely haven't gained weight in other areas like last time. Not complaining obviously, but it just looks kind of funny!

Speaking of last time...here is a quick comparison! Not a huge difference. I think my face looks a lot less full than last time and my belly is a little more round this time but the baby seems to be in about the same spot and my belly is about the same size.

I plan to update with my ultrasound pics and video from our appointment on Friday so check back then!
